The women gather at the front of the Mosque and sit at tables to pray, read, and study the Koran. Some politely prefer not to interact but this woman communicated with eye contact and some conversation about what the women do there. They pray aloud and when the Israeli security forces come close they pray even louder. Their presence is strong. This is an act of resistance in a place where there has been deadly violence over matters of sovereignty and religion in Jerusalem. The Al-Aqsa lies at the heart of Jerusalem’s Old City. Muslims regard the site as the third holiest in Islam, after Mecca and Medina.
